In recent years, due to environmental protection requirements, almost all ships have changed their fuel oil to low sulfur oil,However, due to the residue of catalyst added in the manufacture of low-sulfur oil, there will be a lot of small particles and hardness (Mohs hardness of 8, only compared with diamond) of powder mixed in the fuel, which greatly aggravates the wear of the inner wall of the cylinder liner.

 


 Due to the complexity of the ship's working conditions, the ship's high-temperature cooling water is sometimes insufficient because of the temperature, the inner wall of the cylinder liner condenses into water, forming some dioxide on the inner wall of the cylinder liner.

 


Some sulfur dioxide is formed on the inner wall of the cylinder liner, which combines with the water to form dilute sulfuric acid, which corrodes the inner surface of the cylinder liner and causes cloverleaf-shaped wear.
 Due to the cylinder oil does not fit or feed rate is too low, etc., may also make the cylinder liner wall and piston ring lubrication is not enough, the formation of line, if not dealt with in a timely manner will be sticky bite, serious damage to the cylinder liner and piston ring.

 

According to the manufacturer's standard, the roughness Ra≤1.0 micron (WIN GD) ≤1.6 micron (MAN) is required for new cylinder liner, while for old cylinder liner, if the ellipticity exceeds 1mm or the wear degree exceeds 8 thousandths, the cylinder liner must be replaced.
For the old cylinder liner, if the ellipticity is more than 1mm or the wear degree is more than 8 thousandths, then it must be replaced, i.e. the wear size of the cylinder liner of 500mm bore is 3.5-4.0mm.
When the wear rate of the cylinder liner is less than 0.15 mm/1000 hours, the manufacturer usually considers this as normal wear.

LDM LINER WEAR MEASUREMENT

The LDM is an innovative tool for safe, fast and accurate measuring of cylinder liner wear and clover-leafng.
By using the LDM it is possible to avoid unplanned off-hire and reduce overhauling costs through continual
monitoring of the cylinder condition. Furthermore, pre-inspection of the cylinder condition before a piston over-haul will minimize downtime and cost.
With the LDM it is possible to get an overview of several liners condition
during even a short port stay, as no engine disassembly is necessary.
The measuring results are instantly available in Micosoft Excel format, where the results are clearly presented and 360o contour plots and trend plots easily can be prepared and shared.The results can be used as a stand-alone measurement in connection with troubleshooting, before dry-docking or as a measurement in a series to monitor the liner wear trend.The report format can be adapted by the customer or by FG Marine upon request.
